Habitat Care Instructions

Panellus Stipticus

1. First, it is important to poke a single small hole in the bag using a pen or pencil tip. This will allow a little air to flow into the bag. The culture needs a small amount of air to breathe.

2. The wooden plugs contain the mushroom culture. The white stuff you see is called mycelium. It is the main body of the fungus. The mycelium can be seen glowing upon arrival. At this stage, however, the green glow is faint, and can be seen only in complete darkness after waiting 5 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness.

3. Mushrooms are the reproductive structures of the fungus the same way a flower is the reproductive part of a plant. Your bioluminescent fungi will form mushrooms approximately 2 months after arrival.

4. It’s best to leave the plugs in the bag, sealed, except for the small hole you have made in the bag. This will reduce the likelihood of contamination of the mushrooms. The mushrooms will grow right out of the mycelium on the wooden plugs. If you choose to put them into another container such as a terrarium or a glass jar, please make sure the container is sterile before you put the plugs into it.

5. When you see primordia (baby mushrooms) forming, you may unseal the container to allow the mushrooms to breathe. Like you and me, mushrooms are living, breathing creatures that require oxygen to glow. The mushrooms, once they begin forming, will have a stronger green glow than the mycelium.

6. Recommended location: I recommend putting your mushroom habitat next to your bed such as on a nightstand so you can see your mushrooms glowing in the darkness as you fall asleep.

7. The optimal glowing temperature is 60-70°F.

8. Maintain a humid growing environment, but don’t drown the culture. When the wooden plugs start to dry out, add only a few drops of water.

9. You will need to view the glow of your mushrooms in complete darkness away from windows and nightlights to better see the bioluminescence.

10. For use as a compost additive, place entire contents of plastic bag at top ’newly added’ stage of compost. Mycelium will colonize throughout composting device.

11. For use with coffee grounds and tea leaves: grounds and leaves must be partially dried before adding them to bag substrate. The leaves /grounds should look the same as the wood plugs your fungi culture comes with in terms of moisture content. I recommend microwaving the grounds/leaves to evaporate water and sterilize at the same time.

12. Mushrooms are living organisms. Sometimes they go dormant, grow slowly, or experience other deviations from optimal growth. If this happens, please contact me. Note: Mushrooms don’t grow on soil, they grow on wood.
