Glowing
Panellus Stipticus Mycelium
Panellus stipticus are non-toxic, non-hallucinogenic and are safe for all humans and pets. In nature Panellus stipticus grows on dead logs breaking wood down into its core elements. In cultivation Panellus stipticus can be grown on wood and wood products such as paper and cardboard.
It is not known why Panellus stipticus is bioluminescent. There are two main theories why it produces light: 1. The light attracts insects which spread the mushroom’s spores to new locations. 2. Light production may be a metabolic byproduct that counters free radicals which are harmful to living tissue.
When most people think
of mushrooms they see the fruits we buy at the grocery store and
put on our salad or pizza. However, mushrooms are not the main body
of the fungus. Mycelium, which looks like a lot of fine
white-ish hair strands, is the main body of the
fungus.
Mushrooms are the
reproductive body of the fungus like a flower is the reproductive
body of a plant. In Panellus stipticus both the mycelium and
mushrooms glow. Light is produced by the fungus and does not
require a blacklight to see them glowing.
The glow of the mycelium can only be seen in complete darkness devoid of any light such as from a nightlight. Compared to the mycelium the mushrooms glow very brightly and can be seen in less than complete darkness.
